Artist Statement

Throughout this semester in digital photography, we have learned many techniques. From the different modes of a camera to the proper way to captivate art in a picture, Ms. Cook has embedded in us the methods we need to be the best artists we can be.

In my portfolio you will find works of art that depict my strengths and weakness in digital photography. From the beginning of the semester you will see all the different tricks we’ve learned. My portfolio portrays my hard work in this class, which I happen to be very proud of. I’ve learned how to take something from my dreams and put it into reality. I feel that I have learned the ropes of Photoshop very well. I have proof of this through my creative works of art displayed in my portfolio. I’m also good at making myself into an iceberg. In this class I’ve learned that you have to catch on fast in order to comprehend the complexity of the different techniques we learn on a daily basis. At the beginning of the semester I could not dig deep inside my imaginative cavity and pull out something creative. As time progressed, I learned how to take something simple, give it a personal twist, and have confidence in it to produce a marvelous work of art.

As time winds down and we learn different ways to enhance our pictures, we grow as individuals. We become well rounded students who, not only excel in core courses, but can produce outstanding evidence of our imagination.

PERSONAL METAPHOR "I AM FROZEN IN A COLD WORLD"

I AM FROZEN IN A COLD WORLD. I CHOSE THIS METAPHOR BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS HOW I FEEL IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. I MADE MYSELF INTO AN ICE BLOCK TO REPRESENT HOW THE COLD WORLD HAS HAD AN AFFECT ON ME. I FEEL THAT I DID EXCELLENT. I ACTUALLY WORKED ON THIS IN ONE DAY. I DONT THINK I COULDVE DONE ANYTHING BETTER. MY FINAL PRODUCT WAS SUPERB.

SHUTTER SPEED

We decided to mess around with teh shutter speed. Shutter speed is b asically how fast the image is taking before all the light is captured. Our setting was basically our classroom in the dark with minimal light from the other classes. Basically we set the aperture and ISO, the shutter speed was set to 11" and it turned out pretty good on capturing the light. We had alot of fun playing with the pretty colors.

ISO FILM SPEED

ISO comes from the word International Organization for Standardization basically meaning how much light will get into the picture. The more the ISO the more bright and light the picture will be. When using the flash instead of setting the ISO the picture will end up really bright and all well lit but kinda ugly since everything is the same shadowy thing. I woukld rather use the ISO because the result will actually have dept and shadows which are good but we have to be careful since the higher the ISO the steadier the subject has to be.

FILL IN FLASH

Fill in flash is basically when the camera's flash is used to get the shadows and darks out so the subject can be visible and all the darks are flashed out. I highly recommend that the flash should never be used since it ruins the overall photo by making almost everything white and also making people's oily faces show up and also their clogged up pores like OTHER PEOPLE.

Surrealism: Abyssmal Truth

Many might see this project and wonder what is going on. Basically this project is about a dream I had one terrible night. In the dream I was an angel in a very hot place. I think I was by a volcano or a fiery mountaintop. I was flying above a crack in the ground. Hands were reaching for me through the crack, which I believe was the hidden entrance to hell. I chose a random object like a magnifying glass to tie the meaning into the project. I also put bibles into the project to give it a biblical touch. The meaning is no matter how much right you do, sin is still waiting to be done.

Graduation Program

I believe that I did better than most on the graduation program. Looking at other people’s covers made my cover look sort of incomplete. I believe that if I had more time, it would be the best out of all. I could’ve added more visual and artistic effects to my cover. I didn’t know what to put on my cover, so it was very hard to make it look more interesting. The student handbook was easier to create because I know what students like to see. The most important aspects of graphic design are quality and ideas because those two elements are the key to creating the best design. My advice to next year’s students is to make sure they pay attention to Photoshop because they are seriously going to need to know the info.

Alternate Program: Student Handbbok

I believe that I did very well on the student handbook. Looking at other people’s handbooks made my handbook look professionally made. I think that my concept was put into effect better than any body else’s. If I did anything different the outcome wouldn’t be the same. I struggled with time while trying to complete this project. It took me a while to decide what to create. I believe that I did better on the Handbook than on the Graduation cover because I started on the handbook first so I didn’t have enough time.

Effects

I was supposed to pick which picture I liked the most but I couldn't choose between cross process and emphasis. Both of the pictures are amazing to me. What I like about cross process is that many odd colors pop out. What I like about the emphasis picture is that the background makes the photo look absolutely urban. In my opinion, all the pictures are very artistic.

Frames

I like the frame photo with the shadow the best. I like it because it is more artistic than the other photo. The shadow in the bottom picture contrasts black and white perfectly. I could've posed different in both pictures to make them more intertesting. All in all, I think I did pretty well.

Color!

I love my color shots. They are absolutely phenomenal. The color contrasts are perfect. In the future I could have added more colors in the pictures and posed in a myriad of ways.

Group Collaboration

The most difficult thing about taking these photos were getting all the models to cooperate. We all wanted to do different things and pose different. I wouldn't do anything different because our pictures came out really great.

Lyrics

The lyrics I chose for this project are Bad News by Kanye West.
"Didn't you know I was waiting on you? Waiting on a dream that'll never come true. Didn't you know I was waiting on you? My face turned to stone when I heard the news. When you decide to break the rules?Cause I just heard some real bad news. People will talk like its old news. I played it off and act like I already knew. Let me ask you how long have you known too? You played it off and act like he's brand new. When you decide to break the rules? Cause I just heard some real bad news. Real bad news. Real bad news. Real bad news. Oh you just gonna keep another no you wont. Oh you just gonna keep it like you never knew. Oh you just gonna keep another love for you. Oh you just gonna. Keep it like you never knewwhile im waiting on a dream that'll never come true oh you just gonna keep it like you never knewmy face turned to stone when I heard the news what’s on the news channel crews."
I chose these lyrics because I can relate to them. I relate to the lyrics because I know how it feels to receive bad news especially if its concerning my significant other. Kanye West is an amazing artist I like most of his songs because they have universal themes. These lyrics make me feel as if he wrote the song for me.

Social Issue

My social issue is about relationships. Relationships affect everyone unless you are a sociopath. It affects the way you think and it affects your actions. Sometimes people take advantage of each other in a relationship.
I chose this social issue because it is something I go through everyday. The quote “I am not to be played like your favorite song” means I am not to be taking advantage of in a relationship. The photo is of my iPod and it is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of music.

Haunted Chavez

This project was one of my favorites. We had to find a background picture around school and use all the tricks we've learned in photoshop to make it haunted. My idea was to take a shot of the bathroom and add dead people and blood to the scene. The most difficult decision I had to make was to choose whether or not to add the skull in the wall. I couldn't get the blood to look real in the beginning but it turned out fine. I think I did well in creativity because the overall outcome of the project was great.

Critique: Parkeharrison's "Gaurdian"

An idle stump in the middle of a vacant clearing is the platform for a man who wants to replace himself with a hacked tree. With branches tied to his limbs, he stares down at the rough earth below him wit uncertainty. Suited in a black ensemble, he seems as if he is dressed for a funeral. The black suit may be a symbol of the death of the forest. He has lumber tied to his back and wooden stilts tied to his feet. He looks as if he wants to replace his life with the lifeless tree. It seems as if he is trying to stand above misery that surrounds him. His face has an excruciating expression which probably means that he is suffering like the rest of the trees that have been severed from their roots. The message, which is the importance of wood conservation, is clearly depicted.

Scary Expressions

When I look at this picture I think of all of the zombie movie's I have seen. This picture may be one of the best pictures I've created. It look so realistic. I've shown so many people this picture and they all think the same. My favorite part of making this was adding the ugly facial features.

When I look at this picture I think of a scary movie. If I was ever stuck in a situation where I was stuck on a bridge with a ghost, I think I would lose my mind. The ghost in this picture looks very convincing. I am very proud of myself. I enjoyed cutting myself out of another picture and adding me into this one.

When I look at this picture I think of the Micahel Jackson video Thriller. It has alot of detail. It also looks very disgusting. It looks as if someone threw up on my face. The eyes are the scariest thing in this picture. I enjoyed adding the nasty looking texture onto my face.

The Scream: My Interpretation

My interpretation of this painitng is that there is a weird man screaming out of horror. He has his hands on his head like he doesn’t want to hear something. The man is on a boardwalk under a very dark and dreary sky. There is someone standing in the distance but they do not have a weird face like the screaming man has. The water is swirling behind him. The person who created "The Scream" used dark colors so viewers can understand the painting’s tone.

Creative Me

This project was an opportunity for us to put the tools we have learned to use. We were to take one of our portraits, and change it creatively using the following: selection tools, layers, adjustment layers, layer styles, blending options, paint brushes and opacity.

I love the color contrasts in the image. The colors are very vibrant. I like layer styles alot becasue it makes the picture more artistic. I feel very confident about my Photoshop skills because I didnt know how to to use the tools before. But now I'm pretty good at it (patting myself on the back). My hair is cool too.

Adjustment Layers

In this exercise we learned about Adjustment layers. Adjustment layers allow you to add adjustments to your image on separate layers instead of directly to the image itself. This comes in handy during long complicated projects. In Photoshop every tool is specifically designed to help improve your photo. However, here we took some artistic liberties and explored adjustments creatively.

Self Portraits

For our Self-Portrait project we were to take three self-portraits. They were all to be in black and white, and they were all to capture a mood of some sort. We were also challenged to be as artistic as possible, and stay as far away from normal, cliche portraits that we see on personal pages etc. as possible. One had to use the rule of thirds as the base for the composition; One had to incorporate leading lines, and one had to be taken from a more extreme angle.
My most successful picture is the rule of thirds portrait. I think it is the best because it shows my artistic side better than the others. Next time I will use different strategies to get an artistic picture.. I could've used more props in the pictures. I felt that I did pretty good overall.

Contact Sheet

I feel that my contact sheet came out impressive. I lined the pictures up pretty well so I could have room in the middle of the picture to put text in vertically. I couldve picked a better text font because I dont feel that it fits the contact sheet. Out of all of the compostional tricks I think that my Rule of Thirds picture came out the best. I enjoyed Extreme Angles because it was very out of the ordinary and I had to do some pretty funny things to take pictures like laying on the ground.

Compositional Trick #5 Cropping

I changed the composition by cutting out the extra parts in the picture. I focused on the emphasis which is the caution tape. I like the cropped photo better because it eliminates the extra and unimportant features of the picture. I used the crop tool to make my picture smaller and I also used the crop tool to extend the borders of the picture.

Compositional Trick #4 Extreme Angles

In order to get this angle I stood over the model who was doing a hand stand. I like the color contrasts in the picture. I also like the model's pose. I could've stood back a little more to improve this picture beacuse (as you can see) my shadow is visible. Photographing from an extreme angle can make the shot more interesting because people dont see each other at extreme angles. It is out of the ordianary. I chose to photograph at an extreme angle because it enhances the picture.

Compositional Trick #3: Macro

Macro is when you get close to a picture. The macro button a camera has a flower. U can use macro when you want to get close up enough to see a texture. You can also use macro to take a depth of field picture, which is when the main emphasis of a picture is clear but the backgorund is blurry.
Macro is a good trick to make a picture more attention grabbing. My favorite macro picture was the texture of my hand. I like this picture because it is very artistic. Macro made this picture more definite. You can see every detail in the hand.

Compositional Trick #2: Leading Lines

The lines you see in this photo are called Leading Lines. These lines lead you into the main emphasis of the picture. They also lead you straight into the photo and takes you somewhere else. The purpse of the lines in this shot is to draw you to the rag stuck in the celiling.

Compositional Trick #1: Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is a way to make a picture more interesting by not putting the main object in the middle of the picture. You make a Rule of Thirds picture by diving the picture into a 3x3 grid. Then you put the main object in one of the intersections. In the photo above, I placed the surveillance camera in one of the intersections.
